Survival Magnesium Fire
What is a magnesium flint striker and how do you use it?
I was on couldyousurvivethis.com, a website based off of the Cartoon Network show "Survive This" part of CN Real. There was a game that tested your survival skills by placing you in a forest, lost away from your group and asks you questions about survival. One of the questions was about your stock of fire-making tools, and it gave you three choices of which tool to take, either matches, a lighter, or a magnesium flint striker. The magnesium flint striker was the correct choice. It even says you could use the magnesium shavings as tinder. So what exactly is it, and how does it work? Thank you.

The magnesium comes as a block you shave small pieces from w/a pocket knife. Its not tinder, but a highly explosive material that will light a fire quickly. You must gather tinder and wood before you start your fire. The flint/striker is a like a match that creates a "spark" that will ignite the magnesium. Saw this used on "survivorman" TV show. Its' sold at hunting/fishing & camping supply stores.
