Go For a Picnic on the Beach

The most wonderful time of the year is here. That's right, summer! With the sunrays beaming, the warm summer breeze blowing, and the smell of the sea in the air, there's no need to be stuck indoors. It is the perfect time to pack up a picnic basket and enjoy this surreal summer moment.

Let's start this picnic off with a preparation checklist. Remember summer days are hot, which means you have to keep your food safe. You also don't want sunburn and insect bits to put a damper on your day. Here's a short checklist of things to pack before we get into your summer picnic menu.

*Sunscreen

*Bug repellent

*Aluminum foil

*Napkins/plates/utensils/cups

*A tent (the sun can get strong and you don't want sand flying into your food)

*Ice packs

*Cooler for food and cooler filled with ice

Now onto the menu. When you're enjoying the day at the beach, you want to have light foods you can munch on throughout the day. Forget the half sun-melted ham and cheese sandwich you can guzzle down in 5 minutes. Pack your basket with kalamata olive hummus and eat it with celery sticks or crackers for a luxe Mediterranean feel. To keep with the island feel, prepare a feta cheese and cherry tomato salad, drizzled with a bit of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and garnished with fresh basil leaves. A cold refreshing soup such as gazpacho is also a fantastic beach picnic food. As something a bit heavier, consider preparing a chicken or fish dish that can be eaten cold or room temperature. You can make a Greek chicken salad or chicken fingers. Crab cakes also taste superb cold, and complement the fresh scent of the sea. A beach picnic is never complete without a fruit salad dessert. A mixture of juicy seedless watermelon, ripe papaya, fresh pineapple, chunks of kiwi, and small Turkish apricots is a mouthwatering combination to keep you hydrated and refreshed in the sun.

You're bound to get thirsty hanging around in the sun all day. Make sure you drink lots of water. A tall glass of freshly squeezed lemonade does a fantastic job at satiating your thirst. You could also chop up some ice from the cooler, and mix it with freshly mashed pineapple, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut juice to make yourself an exhilarating pina colada.
